As colleges try out innovative programs, they often get stuck in the pilot stage and struggle to take their programs to full scale—despite successful, equity-increasing outcomes. At Irvine Valley College, we have fought through that struggle. We moved from a two-section pilot to full-scale offerings of our accelerated writing classes and implemented other high-leverage strategies that increase equitable completion of transfer-level gatekeeper classes, including using disjunctive multiple measures for placement and offering co-requisite remediation courses. In this presentation from the 2017 RP Group Strengthening Student Success conference, English faculty from Irvine Valley College share practical advice for departments working to scale up innovative programs. Topics include building support among colleagues, developing a local collaborative training program, and changing departmental and school culture from one of student deficit to one of student capacity.
