New Learning: Accessibility

Equal access to education for all students across California includes basic accessibility of courses, instructional materials, and student services for disabled learners. Accessibility is a core component of diversity, equity and inclusion, and our accepted ethical duty as we represent all the people of California. To help faculty, staff, and administrators understand how to build accessible materials and resources for all students, the Vision Resource Center presents six new learning modules:

  • Introduction to Section 508 – Section 508 sets standards and guidelines regarding access to materials and communications for individuals with disabilities.  This module will assist in a user’s understanding of what Section 508 is and how it impacts individuals and institutions, as well as determining where and when Section 508 applies.
  • Reporting, Monitoring & Evaluation for Accessibility – Reviews the institution’s responsibility in developing the accessibility reporting process and discusses how to create a resolution process while documenting these workflows.
  • Universal Design for Learning – Explore the concept and benefits of universal design for learning and explains how it all relates to equity and disability in an inclusive environment.
  • Accessible Websites – Discusses the standards that make a website and the content accessible to a wide audience and provides resources that are available to design and test website accessibility compliance.
  • Accessible Technology – Reviews what accessible technology is and the variety of ways it is used to reduce learning barriers in campus populations.
  • Accessible Instructional Materials – Reviews various assistive technologies, who plays which role in selecting and adopting accessible instructional materials, and where to find system-wide resources to assist you in making your documents accessible.

New Learning: Maximizing Financial Aid For California’s Community College Students

Financial aid is a critical driver for student success in the California Community Colleges. Providing faculty and staff information about the basics of financial aid bridges campus silos, while also being a means of closing equity gaps as students can get increased support in receiving and maintaining their financial aid. Maximizing Financial Aid For California’s Community College Students is a new learning module in the Vision Resource Center that is meant to help faculty and non-financial aid staff understand basic financial aid information and related support for students.

This module reviews financial aid in the California Community Colleges and covers:

  • College Affordability
  • Financial Aid Programs
  • Helping Students Maximize Awards
  • Supporting Students Through the Process

Accessing the Maximizing Financial Aid For California’s Community College Students Module

California Community Colleges faculty, staff, and administrators can access this module in the Vision Resource Center. Navigate to “Learner Home”, in the “Learn” menu of the main navigation. Type in the module title and click “enter”. Click on the module title to access the “Training Details” page, then click the blue “Launch” button to begin the module. The training will automatically be added to your transcript for future access.

New Learning: Using the NOVA Platform

California allocates over 2 billion dollars annually to community college programs. NOVA is a centralized platform for managing these funds. NOVA’s goal is to increase student success by fostering continuous institutional improvement through data management, fund management and informed program creation.

Using the NOVA Platform is a new curriculum in the Vision Resource Center that begins with a quick introductory module to the purpose and fundamentals of the NOVA platform: what its functions are, the programs that it tracks, and the guiding principles of its development. Following the introductory module, there is a series of videos that cover creating and logging into an account, as well as how to use the platform for specific programs in the California Community Colleges:

  • California Adult Education Program Plan
  • Guided Pathways Plan
  • iPlan
  • Local Vision Goals Plan
  • Nursing Plan
  • Perkins Headcount Certification
  • Student Equity Plan
  • Strong Workforce Program Reporting

Accessing the Using the NOVA Platform Curriculum

California Community Colleges faculty, staff, and administrators can access the Using the NOVA Platform curriculum in the Vision Resource Center.

  1. Log in, and search for “Using the NOVA Platform”.
  2. In the list of search results look for Using the NOVA Platform and click on the curriculum title to access the “Training Details” page.
  3. Click the blue “Request” button. You will be redirected to your transcript, where the curriculum will now be listed as an active training. Click the blue “Open Curriculum” button to open and access the content.

New COVID-19 Community

The Chancellor’s Office is continually updating its website with information about COVID-19, including public health information, emergency planning resources and communications to colleges.

California Community Colleges faculty, staff and administrators can also find resources and information within the Vision Resource Center. Create an account or log in. Under the “Connect” menu, visit “All Communities” and look for the “CCC | COVID-19 Resources, Tools and Discussion”. Select the community and then “Join Community” to access the content within.

New Resource: Strategic Enrollment Management Resource Guide

Strategic enrollment management is a holistic approach to addressing enrollment and student success challenges, enabling the fulfillment of the institution’s mission. Focused on strategically meeting the needs of our community and students, strategic enrollment management promotes student success, optimizes enrollment, and ensures the fiscal viability of our colleges. This resource guide is a compilation of many resources and tools, including foundational elements, promising practices, and other detailed resources.

New Learning: Trauma-Informed Care

Given the diversity and size of our system, it is crucial that we account for students’ experiences while empowering them for success. As many as 85% of youth experience some form of trauma by the time they reach college, which can deeply affect their ability to succeed. This module provides an overview of what trauma is and how it affects many of our students. It then provides information for how professionals can help develop college and classroom environments that support those impacted by trauma.

New Learning: Supporting Undocumented Students

California Community Colleges educates more undocumented students than any other college or university system in the state. This module provides an overview of who undocumented students in our system are, as well as promising practices for supporting them. In addition to covering the protection of student information and how undocumented students can pay for college, it includes a robust set of resources for undocumented students and allies to make use of.

Guided Pathways Field Notes

The Field Notes is a collection of activities and discussion-starters to utilize in team meetings. Designed to create the conditions for innovative thinking, the Field Notes are a workspace where professionals can record, illustrate, and share triumphs and challenges associated with Guided Pathways implementation. This learning module allows you to download the entire collection of Field Notes or build your own by selecting just the one or two activities that you want for your meeting. It also includes a link to the community where you can share how you have used or modified the field notes, any additional activities that you have found helpful, or make requests.

New Learning Series: Instruction in Prisons

Professionals working within prisons and jails need to remain observant, to continue to seek internal and external training and to use their understanding of these systems to adapt and adopt policies and practices to better serve students. This series introduces instructors to the unique opportunities of teaching in jails and prisons. It is composed of three modules, covering what you need to know about Prisons, Students in Prisons, and Instruction in Prisons.

What You Need to Know About Prisons

This module focuses on what instructors need to know when they are entering a jail or prison. It covers rules and regulations, movement within prisons, personal safety and boundaries, custody staff relations, and power structures.

What You Need to Know About Students in Prisons

This module covers general student background and diversity, unique challenges, students’ vulnerabilities, common medical issues, manipulation, and language.

What You Need to Know About Teaching in Prisons

This module covers unique considerations in preparing for the course, textbooks and other supplies, course policies, classroom management, and instructor support beyond the classroom.

New Learning: Student Centered Funding Formula

The Student Centered Funding Formula is all about ensuring community colleges are funded, at least in part, on how well their students are faring. It encourages progress towards the Vision for Success by strengthening incentives to improve access and outcomes for all students. This module introduces the basics of the Student Centered Funding Formula and explores how this change helps align our system’s funding with our broader mission.
